Dirt Buckets
Skid steer dirt buckets — also called standard buckets, general-purpose buckets, or soil buckets — are optimized for maximum struck volume and fill factor in topsoil, fill dirt, mulch, sand, compost, and loose aggregate.

The smooth floor, rolled cutting edge, and high side walls fill quickly in free-flowing material. Capacity ranges from 0.75 cubic yards (60″ width) for compact machines to 1.5+ cubic yards (84″ width) for large CTLs.
The cutting edge is the first-wear component. Quality dirt buckets use a bolt-on AR400 cutting edge — typically 3/8″ thick for light-duty applications, 1/2″ for general construction — with flush-mount hardware that doesn’t interfere with scraping action. The floor of a quality dirt bucket uses 5/16″–3/8″ mild or AR400 plate; in severe-duty or rock-mixed applications, the full AR400 floor of a rock bucket prevents premature wear-through.
When to Use a Dirt Bucket vs. a Rock Bucket
A dirt bucket maximizes capacity in soil, sand, mulch, and aggregate. If your material regularly includes rock 6″ and larger, concrete debris, or abrasive aggregate, the thinner floor of a dirt bucket will wear through prematurely. In mixed-material environments, a rock bucket handles both applications without sacrifice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What cubic yard bucket do I need for my skid steer?
Match bucket capacity to your machine’s rated operating capacity (ROC). A skid steer with 2,500 lb ROC running a 0.75 CY dirt bucket at full capacity loads approximately 2,250 lbs of compacted topsoil — within spec. Exceeding ROC reduces machine life and creates instability. Most compact CTLs (Bobcat T595, Kubota SVL75-2) run a 0.75–1.0 CY bucket. Large CTLs (Bobcat T870, CAT 299D3) handle 1.25–1.5 CY.
Can I use a dirt bucket for concrete or demolition debris?
Standard dirt buckets are not rated for demolition debris or concrete — the impact and abrasion will wear through the floor and cutting edge prematurely. Use a rock bucket or grapple bucket for demolition material.
How often should I replace the cutting edge on a dirt bucket?
In normal soil and gravel, a 3/8″ AR400 bolt-on edge lasts 400–800 hours. Replace when edge thickness reaches 1/4″ to prevent damage to the bucket floor. Bolt-on edges swap in under 30 minutes with standard wrenches.
